Our Staffordshire Moorlands Training Days, held around the Roaches and Gun Hill, offer members and their hounds the chance to train in a truly authentic working environment.
When We Train
- Training is planned to run monthly or every other month, depending on demand and availability.
- Each session will be limited to 5–6 dogs, giving every hound and handler the time and attention they need.
About Staffordshire Moorlands
These training days are held on private farmers’ land, which provides a unique mix of grassland, woodland, and open moorland. This variety allows hounds to experience different tracking conditions, from working across wide, exposed ground to following scent in wooded cover. The landscape closely mirrors the type of terrain Bavarian Mountain Hounds were originally bred to work in, making it an excellent training environment.
The Staffordshire Moorlands are renowned for their rugged beauty and working heritage. By partnering with local farmers, who kindly allow us to use their land for training (with a fee paid for access), we are able to offer a truly realistic and practical training setting. This collaboration not only benefits our members but also supports the farming community.
What to Expect
During the day, hounds and handlers will:
- Take part in scent-tracking exercises tailored to varied ground conditions.
- Learn handling and communication techniques that strengthen working partnerships.
- Experience the challenges of moorland tracking, building both confidence and skill.
- Enjoy a supportive atmosphere where owners can exchange knowledge and experiences.
