Purchasing a BMH
Bavarian Mountain Hounds are no doubt adorable as puppies, however they soon grow into independent, strong willed hunting hounds. Please read through this page to gain more information on the breed and assistance with breeder selection.
Considerations to make before purchasing a Bavarian Mountain Hound
I would like to add a Bavarian Mountain Hound to family, what do we as a household need to consider?
All hounds, regardless of breed or mix, deserve a permanent, loving, clean and secure home. If you decide to purchase a hound on impulse without the correct consideration, planning and research, there is very likely to be heartache for the family and the hound if things get out of control.
People have acquired Bavarians for the wrong reasons and these hounds often end up being rehomed.
It is wise not to consider the breed if you:
Is a Bavarian Mountain Hound the right breed?
Buying any dog is a big commitment that should not be looked at lightly. Bavarian Mountain Hounds can live to between 12 – 15 years and you need to be committed to the upbringing, attention, continued training and patience required with the breed as well as providing a permanent loving home for the entirety of the hounds life.
It is also a good idea to meet the breed in person before committing to a hound and find the type of hound that will suit your lifestyle.
Speak with and visit more than one breeder.
Visit the BMHS tracking events and speak to people who own and work the breed already.
If possible, go out hunting with a handler of a Bavarian Mountain Hound to see what the breed is used for and capable of in the UK.
Can a Bavarian Mountain Hound live outside in kennels like my other dogs?
Bavarian Mountain Hounds do not make good kennel dogs like a Labrador or a Spaniel would. Bavarians are social, intelligent creatures and much like other working breeds, if they are not kept mentally happy will become bored, unhappy and destructive.
How do I select the right breeder for me?
Selecting the right breeder is most possibly as important as the selection of breed. Take your time, do your research and do not rush off and buy a puppy! Look at all the qualities you want in a hound and which activities you intend to participate in with your prospective hound and then make contact with several breeders and try and meet as may Bavarians as you can. After speaking to several breeders, you will have an idea of their breeding philosophies, breeding programmes and a bit of genetics about the breed. Once you are happy, choose your breeder and/or join their waiting list. Never buy a pup from pet shops and be very wary of buy hounds or puppies from any of the free-ad websites.

It is wise not to consider the breed if you:
- Only go hunting occasionally and the hound will be taken out a couple of times a year without proper training, conditioning or care.
- Wish to breed dogs for monetary gain. They are not breeding machines!
- Wish to teach responsibility to you children
- Want a status symbol to show off to your hunting buddies
- Wish to keep a kennel dog. Bavarians need to be part of the family to thrive.
